Ricoeur I 103 Interpretation of dreams/Freud/Ricoeur: The mental work involved in dream formation is divided into two activities: the production of dream thoughts and the transformation of these thoughts into dream content. ("Die seelische Arbeit bei der Traumbildung zerlegt sich in zwei Leistungen: die Herstellung der Traumgedanken und die Umwandlung derselben zum Trauminhalt". (S. Freud, GW 11/111 510 f.)) The dream thoughts, Freud adds, are not of a special kind. Dream work, on the other hand, is characteristic of the dream; this activity is something completely different [from waking thought] qualitatively and therefore not at first comparable with it.
